Filter Invites Applications for Our Drug War Journalism Diversity Fellowship

Since launching in September 2018, Filter has greatly expanded in scope and readership, establishing itself as the leading dedicated venue for harm reduction journalism. We’re now seeking to enhance our coverage by reopening our Drug War Journalism Diversity Fellowship to early-career writers of color.

The Fellow will join Filter‘s small team on a 1099 basis. Their role will be to develop, research, report and write stories, and to assist with a range of other tasks in the work of sustaining a daily publication. Strong writing and reporting skills are essential, together with the imagination to propose fresh ways of breaking and covering news on a daily basis. Candidates will also need to demonstrate their familiarity with, and commitment to, drug policy reform, harm reduction and/or wider human rights and social justice issues.

The Fellowship will last for six months. During this period, the Fellow will work for Filter for an average of 15 hours per week, paid at a rate of $20 per hour. A flexible schedule will seek to accommodate the Fellow’s other work or life commitments. The Fellow will benefit from producing a large and varied portfolio of published work, from the mentorship of experienced editors, and from developing networks of contacts in journalism, harm reduction and related fields.

Filter‘s Drug War Journalism Diversity Fellowship was previously awarded to Sessi Kuwabara Blanchard and Alexander Lekhtman. Both have produced substantial bodies of well received work, and both have continued working for Filter in different ways, far beyond the initial periods of their Fellowships. It is hoped that a successful new Fellow may receive similar opportunities.

Candidates who live within daily commuting distance of New York City will initially be preferred, because of our intention of returning to our Manhattan office when circumstances allow. However, with the team currently working remotely, candidates in other parts of the United States may also be considered. The Fellowship is only open to people of color. People who have been personally impacted by the drug war are particularly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

* Regularly propose, research, report and write a diverse range of shorter news reports about drug policy, harm reduction and intersecting subjects
* Similarly develop occasional long-form pieces, which may include investigative reports, interviews, essays and more
* Carry out promotional, technical, administrative and fundraising tasks as required

* Experience of writing for an audience, and preferably of reporting stories
* Excellent writing and research skills
* Technical and social media fluency
* Excellent communication skills, a team ethos and the ability to juggle different relationships and responsibilities
* A demonstrated personal commmitment to, and knowledge of, harm reduction, drug policy reform and/or wider human rights and social justice issues. Familiarity with issues around tobacco harm reduction would be a particular advantage.

To apply, please email a resume and brief cover letter, including three linked articles or blog posts that you have written, to: Editor [at] Please include “Fellowship” in the subject line. We regret that we may not be able to respond to all applications. Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis until the Fellowship is filled.
