At Rock Health, we’re investing in healthcare solutions built to impact all of humanity. We believe the best solutions—and businesses—will be created by teams who reflect the diversity of the people they serve. With severe gaps in startup leadership representation, especially among Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), our sector has work to do.
We have work to do in terms of representation among our own team at Rock Health, and both in funding BIPOC founders and supporting diverse talent within our portfolio companies. We’re eager to share more about our internal commitments soon.
As one step in this journey, we’re excited to be partnering with Dr. Ivor Horn on a new research initiative on diversity in digital health. Dr. Horn, most recently Chief Medical Officer at Accolade, brings deep startup expertise as well as her ongoing work as an academic and pediatrician to address inequities in healthcare. We teamed up because right now, there is no means of baselining the racial and ethnic diversity of leadership at digital health startups. Our initiative will include a national survey for leaders of healthcare technology startups that will capture and report aggregate data on:
For an accurate snapshot of the digital health ecosystem, response rate is key. At Rock Health, we’ll encourage survey participation among our portfolio. We’re thrilled to be joined by other investors who share our commitment to bringing new, actionable information to the ecosystem and will encourage survey participation from their portfolio company leadership teams.
With accurate diversity data and qualitative insight from individual experiences, we hope to work toward addressing disparities in entrepreneurial leadership, non-capital support, and funding. A full report of aggregate findings will be publicly available in Fall 2020.
If you are a leader (Manager and above) at a US-based digital health company, please complete the survey.
If you’re an investor or entrepreneur who would like to get involved, please reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We welcome your feedback, questions, and commitment as we endeavor to build a more inclusive future for healthcare innovation.
