Diversity in Dietetics | NutritionJobs

The conversations and actions around diversity in dietetics has been so engaging! It’s a project that NutritionJobs has been supporting but will pledge to continue to do more. Stayed tuned for dietetic career webinars for Diversify Dietetics and other groups.

About 13% of US Dietitians identify as not white, per the CDR survey, compared with about 24% of Americans that identify as not white, per U.S. Census data. Our profession representation should mirror our demographics.

I’m furthering my support of Diversify Dietetics now and into the future. At FNCE 2019 we collaborated at the Member Product Market Place at my booth. And I was also able to donate to their work. Tamara S Melton, MS, RDN, CPHMIS, and Deanna Belleny, MPH, RDN, work hard to create a community for students, professionals and educators dedicated to increasing ethnic and racial diversity in the nutrition and dietetics profession. There are many ways to support their important and obviously much needed efforts.

I’ve been encouraged with how other dietitians, dietetic groups, and other professionals have been highlighting ways they are getting involved or spotlighting organizations that are making a difference.

Charlemagne Tha God is so right when he says to get people of color in places of power and represented appropriately in the workforce.

Here is a dynamic (evolving) list of resources as ways to get involved in amplifying diversity in dietetics.

Action from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Words from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
6/9/20 – The Academy recognizes the lack of diversity in the nutrition and dietetics profession and is compelled to make changes – we need your help. One initiative that I am excited to share with you is our work to expand funding and outreach for nutrition and dietetics programs for people of underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups.

The Academy has partnered with the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education to encourage Congress to provide $300 million in funding for minority-serving institutions that would support allied health programs, including nutrition and dietetics. In addition, we are requesting $10 million for nutrition and dietetics career outreach.

In addition, the Academy is seeking members who are interested in advocating specifically on this issue. To join our efforts, complete this form to participate in the Health Equity and Diversity Advocacy Group. Complete this form to easily send a form to congress.
