BOLIVIA, NC – Brunswick Community College (BCC) has been named a finalist for the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) for the 2020 Awards of Excellence, in the category for Advancing Diversity. The AACC Awards for Excellence recognizes exceptional work among the nation’s two-year colleges.
“For over 34 years, the faculty and staff of our BIP have provided educational, social, and employment opportunities for over 1,000 adults diagnosed with intellectual and physical disabilities. Our nationally accredited program currently provides 130 students with unmatched opportunities and initiatives for growth and community integration” said BCC President Gene Smith. “We could not be more excited about being named an American Association of Community College Excellence Award finalist.”
BCC’s applied for the Advancing Diversity award in November 2019 to showcase the amazing work at the Brunswick Interagency Program. The Advancing Diversity award recognizes colleges that have contributed significantly and over a sustained period of time to advancing diversity in community college leadership, the community and within higher education as a whole.
Colleges must meet several criteria to be eligible for the award, including sponsoring programs to promote diverse leaders and engage diverse student populations, modeling innovative and progressive practices to support institutional equity and maintaining and advocating policies that support diversity.
The AACC — the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges, represents nearly 1,200 two-year, associate degree-granting institutions and more than 12 million students.
The winners of each category will be announced at the AACC annual convention on March 28-30 in National Harbor, Maryland. Columbia State Community College (Tennessee), Florida State College at Jacksonville, and Seminole State College of Florida are also finalists in this category.
